New Expressions

1. A は B です。: A is B.

*「です」is used at the end of a sentence. When 「は」is used for particle, the sound of 「は」becomes 「wa」

E.g おなまえはなんですか。What is your name?

わたしはジェフです。I am Jeff.

2. A は B ではありません。: A is not B.

*「ではありません」is a negative form of 「です」

E.g. わたしすしがすきではありません。I don't like sushi.

3. A は B ですか。: Is A B?

* A question sentence is made by putting 「か」at the end of a sentence.

はい、A は B です。 (Positive reply)

いいえ、A は B ではありません。 (Negative reply)

4. これ is used in referring to something that is close to the speaker.

それ is used in referring to something that is close to the listener.

あれ is used in referring to something that is far from both of them.

5. 何ですか（なんですか）。: What?

* N1のN2 　「の」connects N1 with N2 , and N1 modifies N2. Two functions of 「の」1. modify. 2 Possessive.

たれですか。: Who?

E.g. もいもとせんせいはおんなのせんせいです。Morimoto sensei is a female teacher. (modifying)
それはわたしのかさです。 That is my umbrella (possessive)

6. たれのですか。Whose ?

何のですか。What kind of ?

7. *N1の(N2) N2 which is preceded by the possessive 「の」is often omitted, when the meaning is clear without it.

E.g. Q: あれはだれのかさですか。Whose's umbrella is that.
A:あれはわたしの（かさ）です。That is mine (Umbrella).

8. A も B です。: A is also B

A も B ではありません。: A is not B either

E.g . わたしはにほんじんです、やまださんもにほんじんです。I am a Japanese, Yamada san is also a Japanese too.

E.g. わたしはにほんじんではありません、やまださんもにほんじんではありません. I am not a Japanese, neither is Yamada san too.
